Today, more than a third of those aged 55 are in the workforce compared with only 25 per cent a decade ago. And Australians are now facing a rising pension age and moves to increase the retirement age.

But age discrimination exists in both the workplace and the employment marketplace. It doesn’t start at 60 or 70 years – studies show it starts at the youthful age of 45, ignoring experience, qualifications and broad skills.

Discrimination comes in many forms:
From being ruled out for work as being ‘too old’ through reduced training and promotion opportunities to inflexible working conditions. In 2011-12 the SA Equal Opportunity Commission received 44 complaints on age discrimination: 27 were about discrimination in employment.
