National Human Rights Conciliators, Legal Officers and Educators Conference

The South Australian Equal Opportunity Commission proudly hosts the 2011 National Human Rights Conciliators, Legal Officers and Educators Conference.

The conference will focus on current topics in regard to discrimination and will provide the opportunity to discuss issues faced by conciliators, legal officers and workplace educators in their day to day work.

The conference is for Australian and New Zealand human rights agency and equal opportunity commission staff. Agencies will be emailed a confirmation code for online booking. Click here to book for the conference>>

Program

The program will include interesting presentations, engaging workshops and insightful discussions, with time for attendees to interact and share experiences. The conference focuses on the following themes:

  • Racism
  • International Students
  • New media and emerging technology
  • Topical issues

Keynote speakers

  • Joris de Bres, the New Zealand Race Relations Commissioner will talk about the New Zealand Human Rights Commission’s work ensuring the safety of international students.
  • Dr Salman Sayyid, Director of the International Centre for Muslim and Non Muslim Understanding at the University of South Australia.

Cultural Performance & Welcome to Country

The National Conference will be opened by Aunty Josie who will provide the 'Welcome to Country'.

"Aunty Josie is well known for her role as a Kaurna Elder who is highly respected amongst the Kaurna and wider Aboriginal populations and the wider community. Her commitment to the advancement and wellbeing of Aboriginal people, particularly children and youth is acknowledged by all within the community. She is described by many as a special person who welcomes and encourages all cultures to work together."

The Kurruru Youth Performing Arts Inc (Kurruru) will perform a Dance Ensemble as part of the opening ceremony. The Ensemble will present "a selection of contemporary dance informed by traditional movement and forms but interpreted into new work. The Dance Ensemble brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancers from a range of ages from across Adelaide to perform a range of work that explores ideas of Aboriginality, Identity and Pride as Indigenous people."

Indigenous Officers Meeting

The Indigenous Officers Meeting is being held on Wedneday, 30 August 2011, 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the Equal Opportunity Commission training room.

The meeting offers Indigenous staff from across the different jurisdictions a chance to meet and talk about their work, the challenges and the rewards, with other Indigenous staff.

The conference dinner will be held on Thursday, 1 September 2011 at:

Update on submission of papers

Delegates who are presenting at the conference are requested to submit their papers by COB on Friday 5 August 2011. PowerPoint presentations are due by COB on Friday 19 August.
