Animating the Human Rights Debate in South Australia - a Human Rights Day Symposium
The UniSA School of Law, Peace Defence and Security Cluster, and the South Australian Equal Opportunity Commission jointly present a symposium to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day 2008. Sessions will include 'The International & Domestic Imperatives for a Charter of Rights: What are they?', 'Which Rights? Whose Obligations?', and 'Human Rights and Security'. Arts Access SA's Visual Arts Project "A-Frame Exhibition and Auction" 2008
The A-Frame Exhibition and Auction was developed to address the critical need for development of pathways for artists with a disability toward recognition of their work in the visual arts mainstream. The Exhibition runs from 5 – 23 November 2008 at the Adelaide Festival Centre. The key event of the project is the Auction on Sunday 16 November 2008 (2-5pm) but all works are also presented on-line through Arts Access SA's website where pre-bids may be made.
Pre-employment medical tests under examination
In a decision handed down on 4 September 2008, the Equal Opportunity Tribunal found that failing a back fitness test should not have disqualified a bus driver from getting a job. Read more about the Tribunal Decision>>

New Guidelines for Licensees
The Equal Opportunity Commision, together with several other organisations including Drug and Alcohol SA and the Australian Hotels Association, has recently developed guidelines for licensees on how to treat patrons fairly and avoid discrimination in licensed venues.

Facebook falsehoods payout
On 24 July 2008 a British man was awarded £17,000 (about $A35,200) in damages by the British High Court after the Court found that he had been defamed via a Facebook entry, and that his privacy had been breached.

Paid maternity leave overdue
In a submission to the Productivity Commission Inquiry into Paid Maternity, Paternity and Parenting Leave, Equal Opportunity Commissioner Linda Matthews said she often receives enquiries from women who find their hours have been reduced upon telling their employer that they are pregnant, or are unable to return to their position after they have taken maternity leave.
