Equal opportunity law applies to renting flats, rooms or houses and staying in hotels, motels or caravan parks. It also applies to the sale of land.
Under the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, a person cannot be denied accommodation, or given unfavourable conditions in an accommodation agreement, on the basis of the following characteristics:
- age
- association with a child
- caring responsibilities
- disability
- experience of domestic abuse
- gender identity
- intersex status
- marital or domestic partnership status
- pregnancy
- race
- sex
- sexual orientation
- spouse or partner's identity.
